North-central Oregon is home to a geologic gem called John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. It is made up of three units: the Painted Hills, Clarno, and Sheep Rock.

To produce these images, ordinary household substances that you might find in your medicine cabinet, kitchen, or garden shed are dissolved in water and smeared on a microscope slide.
