Wind River Canyon Portfolio

Looking north up Wind River Canyon along US Highway 20 in Wyoming, toward Thermopolis and the Wedding of the Waters. Bright red Triassic beds of the Chugwater Formation glow in the morning light.

This is the oldest group of exposed rocks in the Wind River Canyon: Archean-age black schist and amphibolite, almost 3 billion years old. Some of the amphibolite show traces of pillow structures which indicate the original rock material was extruded under the ocean surface along volcanic vents.
