Mandala Photographs in Color

Mandala is the Sanskrit word for circle, the basic shape that organizes all its many forms.  For thousands of years, across dozens of cultures, mandalas have guided meditation, promoted spiritual growth, recorded the passage of time, and symbolized the cosmos. Creating mandala photographs has been an ongoing project of mine.

Portfolio of mandala photographs in color

Here is a gallery of recent mandalas in color. Because they are round, the square aspect ration seems to be the most pleasing. I hope you like them!

How I make mandala photographs

In these mandalas, flower-like patterns emerge from simple forms repeated radially around a common center. These simple forms include wisps of smoke, edges of soap bubbles, swirls of food color in milk, strands of LED lights, and various natural objects. Then, I photograph the forms separately, combine then, and replicate them in Photoshop.
