Durango & Silverton Historic Train

The fall photographic trip on the Durango & Silverton Historic Train is a real treat for any photographer or train buff.

Photographs of the Durango &  Silverton train

Here are some photographs of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train. Taken in the fall of 2013, they depict views of the all-photographers roundtrip between Durango and Silverton, Colorado.

Why is the Durango & Silverton Historic Train special?

The train is special because of its restored, narrow-gauge, coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive. This  locomotive is followed by equally historic and restored passenger cars. And, on occasion, the new, totally enclosed, sky view car is added to the train. This special car gives riders an unobstructed view of the sky and surrounding mountains through its domed glass roof.

The special photography trips are extra special, because they provide photographers with many opportunities to disembark  and photograph the train steaming by along the tracks. These special trips are scheduled from late spring through early fall.

On our 9-hour trip, we had the opportunity to get off, set up our tripods, and photograph the train in a variety of settings. The engineer would back the train up and steam past us several times so that we could get that special shot. We even got to climb above the highland as the train travelled a narrow ledge high above the Animas River.
