Kasha-Katuwe Photographs

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is a fantasy land for photographers. This is because hundreds of beautiful white and pink hoodoos appear to be marching out of the rock face. And, amongst these hoodoos runs a trail that provides breath-taking views in every direction.

Where is Kasha-Katuwe?

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks is about 55 miles northeast of Albuquerque, near Cochiti Pueblo. And, the drive up from Albuquerque is absolutely beautiful. To help you plan your visit, here is an interactive mape of the National Monument at this BLM site: https://www.blm.gov/visit/kktr.

Photographs from Kasha-Katuwe

Most of our photos are from the loop hike through the tent rocks. We have also included photos from the road up to the Veterans Memorial.

It’s the Geology!

It is the geology that makes Kasha-Katuwe so special. That is, delicately layered sand, gravel, volcanic ash, and tuff from numerous volcanic events have slowly eroded creating beautifully tapered hoodoos. If you are interested in the geologic details, here is an article by New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources: https://geoinfo.nmt.edu/tour/federal/monuments/tentrocks/home.html.

The famous “Fairy Chimneys” of Cappadocia in Turkey look very similar to Tent Rocks. That is because they are the result of the slow erosion of volcanic rocks and debris.

The Hiking Trails

The Cave Loop Trail, rated as easy, is 1.2 miles long. However, the Canyon Trail is a 1.5-mile, one-way trek into a narrow canyon with a steep (630-ft) climb to the mesa top. From this viewpoint, there are excellent views of the Sangre de Cristo, Jemez, Sandia mountains and the Rio Grande Valley. Both trails are maintained; however, during inclement weather the canyon may flash flood and lightning may strike the ridges.

Here is a PDF version of the trail guide, provided by the BLM at: https://www.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/files/NM_KKTR_Brochure_2018_Trail-Guide_508.pdf.
