Back in 2011, I visted Carlsbad Caverns National Park. As a result of that visit, I posted a series of posts about how to capture, develop, and polish photographs taken in the caverns. Here is an addendum to those posts. It contains photos of the caverns, but also of the surrounding area.
Photos of Carlsbad Caverns and environs
Carlsbad Caverns is a major destination. However, do not miss the stunning locations nearby: Lincoln National Forest, Living Desert Zoo, and Guadalupe National Park.
Carlsbad Caverns
Here are photographs taken along the Natural Entrance Trail and the Big Room Trail. For more about Carlsbad Caverns, visit the NPS site.
As a photographer, keep in mind that lighting is minimal. There is path lighting and then there is stage lighting. My advice is to try to work with the stage lighting and shoot HDR — avoiding the need to use flash.
Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park
This native wildlife zoo and botanical garden is on the north side of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Here is the Website for the State Park and the Website of the Friends of the Living Desert Zoo.
Lincoln National Forest
Sitting Bull Falls Recreation Area, part of Lincoln National Forest, is a lovely destination in Lincoln National Forest. It is an oasis in the Chihuahuan Desert where there is the 150-foot Sitting Bull Falls. Be sure to check out the other sites in the Forest.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park
Thirty-two miles south of Carlsbad Caverns National Park is Guadalupe Mountains National Park. It is the only national park in the state of Texas.
Photograph Guadalupe Peak from the road near sunset, because the warm sun makes it glow red. And, the agave and yucca make good foreground subjects.
